BE AN ULTIMATE SURVIVOR

NOT AN ULTIMATE FIGHTER

Martial Arts vs. Self-Defense

If you’re reading this, you’re probably searching for something more than just a martial art. Perhaps you’ve personally experienced violence, or have seen enough news stories to understand that most fights you’ll find yourself in as an adult will involve criminal intent, weapons, and sometimes, multiple assailants. You may have determined that mainstream martial arts seem to be missing what you’re wanting or needing, and you have no interest in competing in kickboxing, grappling, or MMA —or training under those rules.

While unarmed martial arts training is an important component in learning how to defend yourself, it’s only a small part of the bigger picture of self-defense. Unlike martial arts, self-defense is not just about learning how to physically fight off an assailant.

It’s about anticipating the attack and preventing it.

It’s about ensuring you have a genuine advantage beyond that of your physical fighting capability.

Self-defense is about keeping you safe in the broader context of your daily life.

The Fundamental Problem

Different Jobs require Different Tools

Martial arts have transformed significantly with the rise of combat sports, and have undergone more refinement and innovation in recent years than perhaps ever before in history. However, despite this progress, modern martial arts training continues to ignore the complex legal realities of physical conflict in our culture.

With the cost of a criminal defense attorney ranging from $30,000 to $500,000 or more, getting into a fight or using too much force to defend yourself can be costly. You can be left jailed, impoverished, and socially damaged for years to come. We should ask ourselves:

What is the best possible result from being involved in a physical altercation?

The fundamental problem with MMA, Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing, Krav Maga, and other mainstream martial arts is that they simply do not provide you with the tools to address anything beyond the physical conflict. When the only tool you are given is the ability to fight, you have a tool that often encourages conflict above other more intelligent alternatives.

The Logical Solution

Strategies for Success

Should you have to defend yourself, it’s essential to possess the tools to survive all stages of the conflict —both physically and legally.

Here at Columbus Self-Defense, we provide you with those tools. Our logic-based system has been developed for the individual who desires a more intellectual approach to modern self-defense. Geared for the busy lives of students and professionals, our training provides informative and effective strategies for ages 16 and up. Train privately one-on-one, with a few friends, or in a group seminar with flexible scheduling.

What makes CSD unique from the typical MMA, Jiu-Jitsu, or kickboxing class?

  • You’ll learn awareness. Like any other skill, learning how to be aware takes training. We break down how to recognize the advantages and disadvantages of your environment, how to spot specific danger signs before an attack, and how to make yourself a hard target.

  • You’ll learn to de-escalate or escape first. Physically engaging should always be a last resort. We’ll teach you ways to avoid fighting through the observation of body language and by understanding and manipulating human nature. If de-escalation fails, you’ll learn to implement strategies for escaping the situation.

  • You’ll learn effective weapon strategies. There is no such thing as a fair fight, which is why you will work with common self-defense weapons including pepper spray, sticks, knives, and firearms. In grappling, you will learn to note positional advantages and disadvantages based on the ability to access and use a weapon.

  • You’ll train to fight dirty. We take the sneaky and ‘high-percentage’ techniques from Jujutsu and other martial arts that are best-suited for self-defense and teach you to apply them under pressure and resistance. In conjunction, you’ll learn the appropriate positions to integrate attacks to the eyes, groin, or small joints to compound damage and end the fight quickly.

  • You won’t train under any competition rules. In fact, we’ll encourage you to break them. The only rule we acknowledge is the legal standard for self-defense. Do you know what constitutes deadly force and when it is justified? Do you know what to say, or more importantly, what not to say to the police after a situation has occurred? Have you ultimately won the fight if you end up in jail or sued? We break down the legalities and nuances of self-defense so you can use the law to your advantage.

  • You can train in shoes. The vast majority of conflicts occur when both the defender and the aggressor are wearing shoes. Training in shoes not only aids in realism, but is both safer and more hygienic.

Change Your Strategy

Jujutsu: Better without Rules

A tool without the right strategy is of limited use and can even become self-defeating. When a physical conflict is unavoidable, it is crucial to have a powerful set of skills to fall back on. Jujutsu is one of the most tested martial arts ever developed and is the origin of many modern systems. Our training focuses on the most applicable techniques for use in a self-defense context when facing either an armed or unarmed attack. We omit the competition rules and teach you to defend yourself within the constraints of the law, from escaping the situation to using deadly force. Our physical self-defense strategies include:

  • Managing distance and creating a path for escape

  • Protecting yourself while accessing a weapon

  • Taking away your aggressor’s ability to punch you

  • Getting your aggressor on the ground and maintaining dominance

  • Fighting off your back, escaping bad positions, and getting back to your feet

  • Assessing the situation and choosing the appropriate weapon

  • Using self-defense and use-of-force laws to your advantage

Change Your Mindset

Helping You Climb the Pyramid

Learning to defend yourself can be an important first step to changing your overall lifestyle. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs illustrates our basic requirements for health and fulfillment. Until our needs at the current level are met, we will lack the motivation to pursue our needs at the next level. Interestingly, after our immediate physiological needs comes the need for security. Without a sense of security in our lives, having self-esteem, establishing relationships, and reaching self-actualization will prove more difficult.

Our unique blend of training provides a fun and healthy way to assist your climb up the pyramid to become the absolute best version of yourself.

  • Develop a sense of security for yourself and those around you

  • Mitigate stress and anxiety

  • Become more perceptive to body language and communicate more effectively

  • Stimulate creativity by viewing everyday things from new perspectives

  • Increase strength, flexibility, endurance, and overall health

  • Build confidence and leadership qualities
